Travel in the folk music of the Carpathian Basin – The concert of Panni Demeter and the Bajkó Band

bajko slide

Towards the dawn, when the legs are tired and the head becomes heavy, the ideas spill out from the heart. They sing about fate, relieve from the weights of their soul, share their happiness, message their lovers and answer them, cry for the living and praise the dead, get enlisted for soldiers, get married, die. In these songs also townsmen can find their fates, although they don’t have too much in common with the folk culture. And not only Hungarians, but non-Hungarians as well.” (Mr László Kelemen)

Panni Demeter together with the Bajkó Band propose a travel in this rich folk culture throughout the Carpathian Basin. They will present the folk music, the folk songs as well as the folk dances of the different regions thus inviting the audience for a real travel in space and time.

Panni was born in Târgu-Mureș/Marosvásárhely (Romania). She first met with the Hungarian folk music and songs in a youth camp organised by Mr Zoltán Kallós, the well-known ethnographer. After this experience she started learning folk songs and participated on many competitions with great success. She was also asked to teach folk songs in numerous children and adult youth camps. Her songs feature on several CD-s, furthermore, she also has three own albums (Panni and Palatka, Transylband, Hungarian songs from Kalotaszeg). Currently she is living in Belgium, but the Hungarian folk culture still plays a key role in her life. She has had folk song performances in different Belgian cities and organised a folk dancing group for children.

The Bajkó Band was created in the spring of 2013 in Budapest, Hungary with the participation of four enthusiastic young musicians representing different regions of the Carpathian Basin. Their common language is the Hungarian folk music, the cohesion comes from friendship and their common aspire for progress. Their repertoire covers the authentic folk music of different Central-Eastern-European regions.

The first violinist of the band met with Panni Demeter in a folk dancing camp in Transylvania. Their common devotion to folk music resulted is a good cooperation – continuation of which is the current concert.
