Parliament elects new European Commission

After assessing the nominees, MEPs voted on 27 November to elect the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen, allowing it to take office on 1 December.

The plenary vote brings to an end the long process of careful examination by Parliament of the proposed team of commissioners. Its objective was to ensure that the EU’s executive body has the democratic legitimacy to act in the interests of Europeans.

On 21 November political group leaders and Parliament President David Sassoli agreed that the process of examination had been completed and that Parliament was ready to hold the final plenary vote. The new Commission will start work on 1 December.
